Terminology

Door and Window Measurements - All types of doors and windows are all measured as Width is the first number and Height is the second number, ie. 2x3 windows is 2’ wide and 3’ tall

On Center - A measurement taken from the center of one board to the center of the next

Dormer - An additional design in the overhang that can go above a door or window onto the roof to allow room to fit door/window.

Floor joist - A beam the flooring nails to. 

V Groove - A V-shaped notch cut into paneling or board.

Bead board - A rounded notch cut into paneling or board.

T&G- Tongue and Groove – V notch between joints.

Ship Lap – A nickel size gap notch between joints.

Board & Batten – A type of siding where thin strips of wood "battens” are placed over the seams of panel boards.

Soffit - The material underneath any exterior over hangs

Fascia - The trim board on a building that faces out from an overhang.

Cupola - Small decorative piece placed on the roof of a gazebo or building

Deadwood - Any wood added in order to install paneling or wall boards not needed for structure.

9 – Lite Door – a half glass door with grids in glass making the appearance of 9 windows

6 Panel Door – a solid door (no window) with 6 indentions making the appearance of 6 panels.
